What is the difference between Sekelbos / Sickle Bush and Kameeldoring wood for braai ‘BBQ’?

Siclebush / Sekelbos has a bigger and hotter flame. The Siclebush burns slightly shorter than the Kameeldoring but is a very popular choice.

Where do you get your wood from?

We import all our wood from our own sustainable farms in Namibia.

Apart from fire, what other uses are there for the wood?

Our wood can also be used for decorative purposes.

Are there any toxins in your wood?

No, there are no toxins in our wood…wood such as rooikrans, blue gum, wattle, oak, birch, ash, black wattle, bluegum, any other eucalyptus, contains harmful gums and oils which will destroy the taste of your meat or contaminate your fireplace, living room and chimney with an awful smell.

What are the names of the different types of wood?

Sekelbos / Sicle Bush, Kameeldoring / Camelthorn, Swarthaak / Blackthorn

Between all kinds of wood, which one is the hardest?

If you compare wood types of bulk density factors, it is quite clear which are the hardest:

  • Kameeldoring / Camelthorn = 936 kg p/m3
  • Sekelbos / Sicle Bush = 825 kg p/m3
  • Swarthaak / Blackthorn = 758 kg p/m3
Which type of wood is best for BBQ "braai"?

Mopani / Mupane is becoming hard to harvest due to heavy restrictions in some areas of Namibia.  Longest burning wood; however, has the lowest number of generated head and lower flames, but coals that could last all through the night until the next day. Kameeldoring / Camelthorn is all famous ‘best wood’ for almost any occasion…great all-rounder. Simply cause of the name however density factors of this kind may differ from batch to batch, depending on which area in Namibia it originates from as older trees tend to be denser and grown in-between rocks whereas the younger trees grow in the open fields / dessert lands. Sekelbos / Sicle Bush is very famous for the ‘next level’ braai wood, few glasses of wine and high heat Swarthaak / Blackthorn Thornwood mix are famous for the 85cm high flames it provides. VERY hot flames, and generally a quicker braai will apply. Awesome for pizza ovens, and or open fireplaces and is burns very aggressive.

I know Namibian hardwoods are best for braai, what about fireplace wood?

Wrong! Namibian firewood works BEST for fireplaces too! It is far more economical than using local woods. Some people prefer local woods, but they don’t mind spending 30minutes to light the fire and use a packet of firelighters to get the actual fire going.

Why is Namibian hardwoods best to burn in a pizza oven or fireplace?

Namibian hardwood firewood burns clean, do not contain any gum, oils and is always dry. The softer wood species gives off harmful smoke and destroys the window of closed combustion fireplaces. Also, the glue clogs up the air vents, and gets stuck inside the chimney, therefore extra maintenance is needed to clear your chimney. Some customers prefer the invader sekelbos / siclebush to be a little green as it burns better and keeps its coals longer too, yet this does not affect the burning at all.

Depending on what we have in stock and personal taste, it’s always great to start your fireplace with our Thornwood Mix or Sekelbos / Siclebush firewood as the flames burn up to 90cm tall and being the hottest. After 15minutes, it’s always good to throw some bigger logs Camelthorn onto the fire, after which you can basically forget about your fireplace until late.

Why is the wood whiter or is lighter in color than my previous order?

Since it is a natural product, different weather conditions have a big impact on the soil conditions such as more rain fall than other regions of Namibia. Therefore, harvesting practices differ all over Namibia. Open sand fields or rocky areas are the main cause of the end quality of the hardwood. If that certain area is very sandy, the actual tree grows a lot easier than trees growing in rocky areas being denser as they grow slower. Unfortunately, we cannot control what nature provides.

Which would you recommend for my combustion fireplace?

Depending on what we have in stock and really personal taste; it’s always great to start your fireplace with our doringmix Or Siclebush firewood as the flames burns up to 90cm tall, and being the hottest.
